This winter ice climb with a British mountain guide in the Pyrenees. The ice climbing is amongst the best in western europe. Martin Barnicott guides ice and rock climbs as well as general mountaineering. He also enjoys canyoning, caving, mountain biking. Ski touring and snow shoeing are popular winter activities that are suited to the snowy conditions of the pyrenees. The mountains of the pyrenees are far less busy than the Alps. Compared to ice climbs in La Grave, France the ice-fall climbing in the pyrenees is a joy. Next winter I propose to run ice climbing courses in Romania and to guide rock climbing in Croatia. Skiing is another re-found interest and to marry ski mountaineering with climbing frozen waterfalls and cascades as well as gullies and couloirs in the pyrenean valleys of Barrosa and Pineta in Spain and Gavarnie and Troumouse on the french side of the Pyrenees is superb. I am already sharpening my ice axes and crampons for a full winter of snow and ice climbing. New skis have been purchased and will get the bindings fixed in the pyrenees. I have been guiding for the last 20 years since I first qualified as a guide whilst working as an instructor on rock, ice and general mountaineering courses at Plas y Brenin the national mountain centre in North Wales. It was during this period that I first guided in the Alps as a qualified UIAGM International mountain guide.

I have climbed Everest caved in the Gouffre Berger, climbed the Skye ridge in Scotland in full winter ice conditions.. My passion though is split between icefall climbing and speleology. Canyonning is a more recent re discovery the canyons of the Sierra Guara in Spain just south of the main ice clmbing area of Bielsa in France and Pineta and Boi in Spain. The ice climbing and caving are the amongst the quietest and the best going.

After many winters in scotlad climbing ice on Ben Nevis and glencoe I started to venture to France and Spain in search of ice falls and rock climbs. It was in France near the Verdon that I discovered the worl of canyons, but only recently have I discovered Mascun and the other canyons of the spanish Sierra Guara.

International mountain guides are members of the uiagm, ifmga. Guides are qualified to climb ice, rock and snow in the alps, pyrenees and the himalaya. The trining and assessment covers ice climbing, rock climbing, mountaineering, ski touring or mountaineering as well as an additional part for cayoning. Caving and potholing in the speleological underground world calls for a different set of skills. The Henne Morte - Felix Trombe system in coume ouarnede near arbas in the Pyrenees is the largest and one of the deepest systems in France. Caving here gives days of alpine proportions. You experience all the thrills of exploration in an environment that is savage. The degree of commitment is equal to that of many an alpine climb. I probably get equal satisfaction from potholing as I do from ice climbing or canyoning. The gouffre Berger in the vercors very close to La Grave is a fine area for rock climbs and caves of all lengths and difficulty. The canyons of Provence as well as the rock climbing in the Grand Canyon de Verdon.
